My conflict.

I have thoughts, I have moments when I would like to rant out loud. Unfortunately, I'm afraid of offending people. And this is where my conflict lies. I have strong, passionate moments where I want to write it all down, get it out there for people to read; however, I'm afraid how people will view me after I say it.
So, that's my reasoning behind me neglecting my blog. Out of fear. I've been writing, quietly to myself, in my dimly lit bedroom, on my own personal word document, allowing no one to read it.
Even now, as I sit here, I want to write about my class tonight and how unjust I felt it was. I want to write about my peers and how their little charades make me laugh at their expense. I want to write about my view of society these days.
But in all of this, I won't.

When I remembered I had a blog...

Well...this is awkward. Hey guys, it's been a while.

I had a random thought today, a thought about how I cannot seem to stay motivated. With working out? I fizzle. I stick with it until I stop seeing results and conclude it's not working.  With school? Can you say procrastination?
What led me to this conclusion is that I've been trying to lose 10 lbs before I meet my boyfriend's family for the first time. (yikes!) I thought to myself, I could get up early, run around my neighborhood and then do more cardio and strength training after work! Yeah, didn't happen.
So my question is, how do people do it? How do YOU stay motivated?

6 months.

I know it's corny, cheesy, and probably dumb, but I'm here to talk about the 6 months my boyfriend and I have shared together. Yes, I do realize that 6 months is not a huge feat for anyone, especially if you have experience in long-term relationships, but I don't. He's a first.

He's my best friend, in all the wonderful ways a friend is. He kicks me in rear-end when I'm being a crazy girl. He loves me when he knows I need it. He teases, he makes me laugh, and most importantly, he makes me want to be a better person. I don't think I've ever said that about a significant other and realized I meant it. He makes me want to do well in school so I can achieve my goals. He makes me want to save my money to buy that car that I've wanted. He calms me down late at night and he makes me smile in the mornings. We both have butted our heads together from time to time...and I know he thinks I'm crazy, but I hope I drive him crazy in all the right ways. I hope I make him want to be a better person. I hope I inspire him to do new things.
"Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

I've never been so calmly happy. So comfortable and so worry-free.

You've tolerated me for 6 months, honey. I hope you can tolerate me some more.
Love,
Your Sunflower

Pity Party.

You know the phrase, "Selling tickets to the pity party?" It's what sarcastic friends or family members say to you when you're feeling down or depressed. Well, I am selling tickets? You want one? They're absolutely free.

I cannot begin to explain the past two weeks. I can, however, narrow it down to three words. They. Have. Sucked. Don't get me wrong, there have been ups. I've gotten to see my sister for the first time in about 6 months. I've gotten to see old friends that I haven't seen in years.

But, you know that nagging feeling you get before something bad happens? An intuition, I suppose. I go to bed with that feeling every night. I go to bed thinking that something horrible is going to happen, and I just wish it would happen already. There have been a few fights, a few disgruntled/annoying days at work, a few lonely nights, and a few times where I want to scream into my pillow like it would make any damn difference; but those are all things that I can handle. I just wish the bad... the really bad... would happen already. I wish the bad would come and stop tugging at my stomach, making it a lump in my throat.

However, I lay here, wondering if I could be better. I'm throwing myself a pity party. Not wanting to be around anyone, but desiring for company. Not wanting to go out, but desiring to get in my car and drive. Not wanting to lay here, but desiring to go to sleep. So, what makes these feelings go away? How do you get something that involves intuition and a "gut feeling" to just...go away?

Sigh.

I wish I could be happy again.

I'm tired.

I'm tired. I'm tired of feeling completely surrounded by people, and feeling alone. I'm tired of caring about people, who simply don't care about me the same way back. I'm tired of putting myself out there, making changes to myself, and failing every time. I'm tired of trying to be exceptional, and coming up short. I'm tired of trying to just...be. I'm tired. I'm tired. I'm tired.
I don't want to be on the edge everyday. I don't want to be impatient all the time. I don't want to be aggravated at a sneeze, or typing on a keyboard, or at the sound of people's voices. I don't want to be dependent on someone else. I don't like that I rely on a few words from someone to change my mood. I don't like that when those words don't come, I'm a wreck. I don't like admitting these things about me. I don't like that I'm clingy, needy, or a mess.

But I am those things and I am tired.

So, forgive me that I am these things. Forgive me for being this way.

Feminism at it's best.

I'd like to think that I have a healthy amount of feminist in me. I do enjoy looking nice, being a woman, and giving in to some stereotypes, but that doesn't mean that I am not as equally qualified as doing a man's job, or understanding the same things, or even enjoying "guy" things.
However, there are some women out there that make me want to hurl. For example, I know a woman that should coin the catchphrase, "that's a man's job." Things that are as simple as reloading a stapler, she will ask a man to do it.
"Katie, don't move that bookcase, that's a man's job. Ask someone else to do it."
Thanks, but I got it.
"Katie, you're lifting those boxes? Ask him to do it."
No, I'm really okay, but do you need help with your computer?
"No, Katie, that's a man's job."

These conversations have really happened. Not only does she give in to the stereotype that women are inferior, but she is reinforcing the ideal that women in the workplace belong in reception or secretary positions. Believe it or not, I can do more than answer a phone.

The moral of this? Don't reinforce a stereotype. It's aggravating, it's insulting, and it causes people to hate you.

The Rock and Water

She laid in her bed, snuggled between her many pillows and his arms. She looked up at him, seeing his eyes crinkle with a smile. She always knew his sincerest smile that way.
"You're like a rock," she stated. He looked at her, a little confused. She continued, "You have your set ways, you're grounded, and you're not changing anytime soon." His confusion slowly turned into understanding and with a grin spread across his face he stated,
"You're right. So I guess that means you're water then."
"How so?" She replied.
"Well, water can wear rocks away. They change them...they affect them." He sighed, "Plus water's a little crazy sometimes." He chuckled as she playfully punched him in the arm.
"We'll do great things then, I mean...look at the Grand Canyon." And with that, she beamed at him.

I'm 21, so that qualifies me to give advice...right?

A little bit ago, I posted a blog about uncomplicating your life. I had found those little morsels of good advice from Bellamumma.com (a fellow blogger).
I decided that I would like to offer some of my advice that I have learned (mostly in the past 2 years or so). It's nothing extravagant or enriching, and most of it probably appeals to most people's common sense. However, I've decided to share my insight's with the world...regardless.

1. Soak in the sun. Go outside for a walk, and get your daily vitamin D. People's obsession with skin cancer is out of control. God would have not put us on this earth if the sun was harmful in moderation.

2. Eat. A lot. Again, this is with moderation. Go to your favorite mexican food place and get your favorite dish. Go to that sushi restaurant and try that new roll. Go to a 5 star restaurant and eat that lobster. Splurge a little bit. If you are doing your daily exercise, eating right most of the time, it will not kill you to have a nacho.

3. Follow politics. I didn't vote when I turned 18, and although I don't care for Obama or McCain, I wish my vote would've mattered. Politics influence your daily life, and although they might not affect it now, in the future it will. With age, comes concern for the well being of others, and I'm so happy that I can go to work in the morning and read the daily news...and enjoy it!

4. Be thankful. You're in school? Be thankful. You have a job? Be thankful. You can travel? Be thankful. I struggle with this on a daily basis, and I've come to realize that not noticing the things around you, is just disrespectful to yourself. I have so much going for me, and it's hard to realize it everyday I'm sure I'm not the only one.

5. Trust. This is one of the hardest things I try to do in my life. It's hard to trust people when you've gone through so much (or even a little). You can't let your past dictate your future, and with that, you have to lay those past experiences aside, and just...go for it.

In the moment.

She sat there, quiet, with no sound to be heard. The fan was off, her alarm clock wasn't beeping her awake, and the sun wasn't shining directly into her eye to catch a glimmer of her attention. It was midnight, and the only noise to be heard was the humming of her computer and her fingers typing away frantically upon the keyboard. All she could think about was...nothing. Her mind was free of thought. She had no worries, or troubles. Her happiness encircled her. For the first time, she felt that everything was in it's perfect place in her life.

In a flood of panic, she wondered if it was too good to be true. Could this all change in a matter of moments? The truth was, it could, and that terrified her. Her worries and troubles returned, but in a flicker of clarity, she brushed them away. She would savor her current moment with a smile, the cool side of the pillow, and a good night's sleep.

Freaky Friday

Everyone has their fears. Something that paralyzes, unnerves, and makes their skin crawl. Think long and hard about what it is that petrifies you. Have goosebumps yet? These are my embarrassing fears. These are things that wake me up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. These are things that terrify me.

1. Like most women, bugs freak me out. Not cockroaches, not spiders, and not scorpions. I'll step on those sucks with my designer shoe and call it a day. No problem. It's bees, it's wasps, it's anything that makes that freaky buzzing sound while they fly next to your ear. Even a fly that gets too close to my face causes goosbumps to run down my neck. I have to refrain from my hands waving and flailing at the inanimate air.

*shudder*

2. The dark. Yes, I am 21 years old and I am still afraid of the dark. I watch Law and Order: SVU. I know what can happen! The thought of waking up in my bed, alone, with a strange man standing over my bed, creeps me the F%$& out. (Plus that show "Are you afraid of the dark?" is still engrained in my brain). Congratulations Nickelodeon, you've scarred me for life!

*shudder*

3. Being in a car accident. I'm not scared of a head-on, a fender bender, or a side swipe. I'm entirely afraid of the- out of control, spin out, flip the car -kind of car wreck. The feeling of being out of control and that nothing you can do can change the outcome, scares more out of me than you could know.

*shudder*

4. Drinking expired milk. When I was younger, I was about to enjoy a delicous, refreshing glass of cold milk. As soon as the soured milk touched my lips, I knew it had gone bad; however, I had to swallow it. Why? Because I was at the dinner table. Ever since then, I smell my milk before I drink it. NEVER AGAIN!

*shudder*

5. Hygiene. I have a (not really fear), but paranoia about my hygiene. I am in constant fear of being dirty. I don't have OCD or anything along those lines. But I never wanted to be the kid that was talked about because I smelled bad. I remember those kids in elementary school. They were the ones that smelled like cigarettes, B.O., and urine. They were the ones that stole things out of other kid's desks. Yes, Raymond, I KNOW you took my flower pen. Bitter.

*shudder*

So those are my fears, embarrassing or not, they freak me out. What are yours?

[untitled]

I couldn't think of a title that didn't sound cheesy or overplayed, so I went with [untitled]; however, now that I'm looking at it...it's probably exactly that.
I'm drugged up on sleep-aids, allergy medication, and cold relief, so you might have to bear with me on this post. I'm really sick, or dramatic... I haven't decided yet.

But I digress...

Tonight I was looking through old photographs. Ex-roommate's birthday parties, concerts with close friends, and roadtrips to the middle of nowhere. From "Prom '08" to my first year in college. From the Chicago Field trip to my sister's wedding. I went through them all, and here is what I've decided: I may have had falling out's with people, I may have lost touch with others, and I may have jumped straight to the dramatics, but...

I couldn't think of any of the bad times. I could only think of the laughter, the jokes, the sarcasm, and the fun. I rarely think of the bad times in Texas anymore. It doesn't make me want to move back there or relive every single moment of my memories (God know that I couldn't survive that), but I do look back with fondness now. No more hatred, no more guilt, and no more regret. They happened.

After I came to that conclusion, I moved on to another. I am thankful for those pictures. No matter how much I may have hated that person in that photograph...at that exact moment...we were happy. No matter how long it's been since I've seen them, we captured it. I think that is why I love taking pictures (even though I'm not very good at it). It doesn't matter what the picture is of, it has captured a moment that we can never relive. It's comforting and nostalgic and fulfilling.

When was the last time...

So, when was the last time you did something for the first time?
When was the last time you told someone exactly how you feel?
When was the last time you took a risk, without becoming crazed about the consequences or fearing judgements?
When was it?

As most of us know and have heard numerous times, life is short. We have 75 years on this earth, with the lucky ones granted more. Take a risk, take a drive, take a leap, or take a small step. Just do something for the first time and tell me how good it feels.

"Try on my world, let me show you how good it feels."

April's Goals & Dreams

Hey, look, I'm copying Simply, Valorie and Rachel.
I think this is a great way to keep yourself accountable (and basically everything that is said in Valorie's blog). I want to accomplish something this month, even if it just something small. So here I go...

1. Make preparations for "Making Nevada Healthy": I've started wanting to create a jogging group that would like to get up on Saturday mornings to go...jogging in the park. It's a wonderful park with a lot of different things going on and with a big group, it could be a great way to hold each other accountable.

2. Go to my Body Pump Class at least once a week: I really enjoy this strength training class that I've been doing. I feel noticeably stronger and I've only been doing it for a little over a month. They have it at convenient times on Tuesday's and Thursday's, and although I would like to do both classes a week, I do get sore (and sometimes stay sore) for a couple days after.

3. Pack a picnic: I've been wanting to do PB&J's, Chips, Drinks, Snacks in the park (I adore the parks around here if you haven't noticed).

4. Save more money, spend a little: I have always had a little bit of a spending problem. I've gotten A LOT better from where I was a year ago. My parents have invested their time in a financial class that takes place on Saturday's. They tell me interesting saving-money techniques that they have incorporated into their lives and it makes me want to hoard my cash.

5. Investigate Vegas: I spend a lot of time on the computer/at work/at school, so the time that I can diminish and go exploring, I will.

I'll catch up with you guys at the end of the month to explain my end results.

Insecurities.

I've always battled my insecurities. A constant reminder of that middle school girl who always wanted to hold her crushes hand, but never had the courage. A constant reminder of the girl that finally found "the one", but he wasn't interested. A constant reminder of being the "right now girl", but never more. I've tried pushing these insecurities aside, but they creep back up, inflicting subtle doubts about my life and the relationships I've built. It's hard to think that this insecure little girl has grown up into a woman. It's hard to imagine a life with no drama, no doubt, and no insecurities. Twenty-one years of feelings that have imprinted themselves to the back of my mind, and suddenly...need to be removed.
A long, hard road is ahead of me. It's unpaved, forested, and dark; however, I know that there has to be something better than the tiled overlay that leads me the easy way. No more crutches and no more excuses. I'm delving into uncharted territory. Wish me luck.

Our government...sucks.

Dear Government,

You suck and I will tell you EXACTLY why. The state of Nevada is cutting funding for our education system, meaning that thousands of teachers are losing their jobs, meaning my future career in education isn't looking so bright. That means that class sizes are increasing from large...to huge. That means that elementary school teachers are going to be managing a minimum of 35 students. How are these students going to be able to receive individual and PROPER education when the teacher can't focus on anyone at one time? Billy is having a hard time in math, but John is making a ruckus in the reading corner? It's impossible. Americans already have the stereotype of fat and stupid, and all these budget cuts are going to prove is that every country out there...right. Great idea, Government: Let's cut the funding in an already low-end educated state. The city of Las Vegas has no priority when it comes to education. Why wouldn't you want to change that statistic?

This stint on education leads me to another issue. The wars that are waging across the ocean. President Obama, why are you considering going to Libya? We have troops in the Middle East. We have sent help/money to Japan. We are fighting our illegal immigration problem. There are so many things that America is involved in right now, I'm probably missing a lot of them. We are stretched in every which way and the people that are hurting and suffering in the long run...are your own. Gas prices are increasing, taxes are increasing, and people are NOT getting paid enough to afford this anymore. We've done what we can do in the Middle East. Either they take it and run with it, or they fall apart. It's their decision now.

Another thing, why is 27% being taken out of MY paycheck in taxes? I am a 21 year old student with a part-time job and you are trying to tell me that my lousy paycheck is helping out Momma over there with 5 kids? When people would rather have children for the money versus getting a job, along with collecting welfare, then there is a problem. Our system is TOO EASY to manipulate, and people are DEFINITELY taking advantage. I see this problem everyday in Las Vegas. Believe me, I know.
The reason that the men and women in the government don't care, is because they don't see it and are not affected by it. They make too much money to care about gas prices. Taxes don't affect people who make 6 figures a year. The rich are becoming richer, and the poor are becoming poorer. "The wealthiest 1 percent of families owns roughly 34.3%  of the nation's net worth, the top 10% of families owns over 71%, and the bottom 40% of the population owns way less than 1%." [Wealth Distribution Source]

This is not the complete rants and ravings of an unhappy American, but rest assured that this will continue.

So, in conclusion, our government is flawed, DANGEROUSLY flawed and I am an American who will likely rescind my citizenship in the next 10 years if something doesn't give.

Love,
Your Anti-Government American Pal.

I'd rather be a weed.

What are weeds? They have color, stem, and life. Who hasn't picked up a dandelion, made a wish, and cast it away into the wind, as if the universe could somehow make it possible? They provide hope.
What are weeds? Simply a willful flower, with a mind of it's own. It's determination to take root, make change happen. It locks itself into the ground, only to come back over and over again determining to take root once again.

What are flowers? Pretty, useless things. Providing occasional insight with the, "He loves me, He loves me not..." Only later, to provide despair when the answer you are searching for is not offered.

As for me, I'd rather be a weed.

11:12

She wished for many things when the clock hit 11:11. It was childish and she realized that it had no meaning, wishes don't come true that easily. However, everyday when that clock reached those numbers, she fantasized and wished and hoped like a child. Her wishes had grown more elaborate as the days passed. Her happiness enveloped her and with that came more dreams and more wishes. However, one day, her happiness came crumbling down. A storm came and it grew more furious with each passing moment. As her car faced the treacherous roads, it whipped and spun with the wind. Nothing she could do could control it. With terrified eyes, she looked at the clock. "11:10," is what it read. In that instant, a gush of cold winter air swung at her car, pushing her off the road. Her steering wheel was locked and fear froze her. As she opened her eyes to examine the wreckage, she stared at the clock. "11:12," was all that it glowed. She had missed her moment.

The internet and texting has stolen our integrity.

Many people are unsure of what this foreign word, "integrity", means. Let me give you a few of my favorite definitions.
It has to do with perceived consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcome. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the quality of having an intuitive sense of honesty and truthfulness in regard to the motivations for one's actions.

The internet has stolen this from us. Texting has stolen this from us. It is so much easier to type, text, or write all the things that a person is "feeling"; however, when it comes down to acting upon these feelings, they are different. I cannot tell you how many times people have said something to me and have proved to be false.

What happened to the times when people say exactly what they mean, with no bullshit attached? What happened to the days where people did what they say they would do? What has happened to people's integrity, honestly, truthfulness, and consistency?
I pity those who can text and write and use the internet as an outsource for their feelings. I pity those who can use a "status update" to tell everyone how they feel, but never talk to the person that it is meant for. Be a person of integrity. Say what you feel, do what you say, be truthful and do not deceive those that care about you the most.

Make-up tutorials and haul.

I've been watching makeup tutorials.
2 thoughts ran through my mind.
One: I want to know if people would watch my hair/makeup tutorials if I made them on youtube. Hmm. (more hair versus makeup). And two, I thought I would share some of my favorite things that I've been wearing and using, religiously, for all those girls out there who like trying out new pretty things as much as I do. Wooh. Here they are:

1. "Glow all the way" - by Hard Candy
I actually found this product through my best friend when we were getting ready to go out one night. I use it on my forearms and chest area. I really enjoy it because it adds a "lively shimmer" to your body. It's not expensive, it's something that you can pick up at Walmart for about $5 or $6. I highly recommend this if you want to add an extra something to whatever you're wearing.
2. False eyelashes- These are something that I rarely wear (mostly because I'm mentally handicapped when attempting to put these bad boys on), but when I do wear them, I absolutely love them. Even if you use the "natural" ones versus the dramatic fake eyelashes, they really make you feel pretty and add a dramatic emphasis to your eyes.

3. "Glow Daily Moisturizer"- by Ulta
I recently just bought this product...at Ulta, obviously. Why I like it? Well, it adds a small tan without the smell and without you turning orange. In the description, it states that it is more for evening out the skin tone rather than giving you a tan. It's true. If you want to add a small, healthy glow to your skin with a combination moisturizer, I highly recommend this.

4. "Secret Weapon" - by Frizz-Ease
I only use this product when I have just finished blow-drying my hair. I hate the way my hair looks after I blow-dry, mostly dry and brittle. I put a tiny amount on my hand and smooth it through the ends of my hair. I also like to use this product after curling my hair. It makes the curls more bouncy and doesn't add that matte finish when you hairspray.

5. "Miracle Leave-in Product"- by It's a 10
I have 4 words for you. This saved my hair. I have done every possible damage imaginable to my hair. From, stripping my hair of red color, to bleaching my hair, to dying, to straightening..etc. (you get the picture). I had to grow a completely new head of hair and have been working on that for the past year. If your hair is damaged beyond repair and you think that you will never be able to grow healthy hair again, spritz this on while your hair is wet, avoid blow-drying, and you'll definitely see results.

Alright, that's all I have for right now. I urge my other bloggers to do the same. Let me know some of the things that you use on a daily basis that you absolutely adore. I like learning about new products. If you liked this, let me know. I might do some youtube vids. :)
